Outside the Studio was a newspaper before it was a platform.

I made it in high school at Canada's National Ballet School. It was for the dancers, about the part of our lives that happened outside the studio. Same name, same instinct: artists need somewhere to find each other and find out what is going on.

The problem

Funding for artists is not hidden. It is scattered. It sits on a few hundred arts council pages, foundation sites, and residency listings that each publish differently, update on their own schedule, and expire without warning.

So finding a grant becomes a research job. You open twenty tabs, you check the same councils every few weeks in case something changed, and you still find out about the one you wanted three days after it closed. The work is unpaid, it repeats every season, and it comes out of the hours you meant to spend making work.

The listings that do exist are usually national, usually one discipline, and rarely tell you whether you are eligible before you have read the whole page.

What this does instead

One index, updated daily, read across every source we track. You set up your profile once, with your discipline, your career stage, and where you are based. After that you see what fits and not what does not.

That is the whole idea. Less time searching, more time applying, and fewer deadlines found too late.

Why I built it

I trained as a dancer at NBS, took a kinesiology degree at UBC, and spent three years making work in Berlin. I have applied for this funding. I have also missed it, more than once, because I did not know it existed until it had closed.

I built the thing I kept wishing someone had already built.
