What it is

The Film Heritage Programme supports the preservation and digitisation of German short or feature films of special film-historical, documentary or artistic value. Three funding pathways are available: distribution interest (commercial exploitation plan), curatorial interest (film-historical significance requested by festivals or museums), and conservation necessity (material damage risk). The digital version must have a minimum resolution of 2K and be suitable for cinema screening.

Who it is for

Rights holders of German films of special film-historical, documentary or artistic value, or owners of original film material with rights holder consent. Film archives and heritage institutions may also apply for conservation purposes.

Open to artists in Germany.

What you get

Non-repayable grant of up to €40,000 per film for digitisation, with a required minimum 20 percent applicant contribution (waived for publicly funded institutions applying for curatorial or conservation interest).

What you need to apply

• Distribution or curatorial exhibition plan
• Proof of rights holder status for at least 3 years, or rights holder consent if applicant owns original material
• Proof that film is German production (BAFA certificate or proof of German manufacturer location or significant German artistic contribution)
• Cost estimate or cost breakdown
• Proof of applicant's own funds (bank statement or account confirmation)
• Current business or association register extract (not older than one year)
• Technical assessment of material condition (for conservation interest applications only)
• Explanation of film's significance for national film heritage (for curatorial or conservation interest)
