What it is

The FFA Film Funding Institute supports producers with reference funding based on the success of previously produced films. The funding process has two stages: Stage 1 awards reference funds based on reference points earned through audience attendance or festival success; Stage 2 allows producers, screenwriters, or directors to apply for disbursement of awarded funds for new projects within three years. Feature films require at least 25,000 reference points; talent, children's, and documentary films require at least 10,000 reference points. Reference points are calculated from cinema attendance in the year following theatrical release or from festival participation and awards in defined festival categories within two years before and after the film's release.

What you get

Non-repayable grants awarded once per year at the end of May, based on reference points earned from audience success or festival success, with a maximum funding amount of 2 million euros per film, to be used for production of new feature-length films or other approved uses within three years of the funding decision.

What you need to apply

  • BAFA certification
  • Federal Archives certificate confirming deposit of a film copy
  • FSK certification
  • For talent films: signed filmographies of producer, director, and screenwriter
  • Final audience numbers, current distribution statement, and distributor confirmation of reported audience numbers and net box office revenue for the reference year
  • Consent declaration from other eligible screenwriters and directors and statement regarding distribution of reference funds between eligible parties
  • Statement from involved producers regarding distribution of reference funds and/or proof of festival success or award through document, festival program screenshot, or official award certificate
